The Sandy Lake arena was full of hockey action last week keeping hockey fans on their feet.

Hockey players from Dennis Franklin Cromarty high school were in town to face off against Sandy Lake's finest hockey players.

Two teams from DFC traveled the winter road from Thunder Bay to Sandy Lake for two days of hockey action on February 22 and 23.  Sandy Lake's hockey teams including the Riverhawks, Oldtimers and the 2008 NFNHT Champions the Chiefs met DFC on the ice for several games during their stay.

In a close game against the Oldtimers, it was Chief Adam Fiddler who scored the winning goal in a shoot-out, scoring against Sandy Lake's very own goalie Darren Meekis, who was representing DFC where he is a student.

The games served as a warm up for Sandy Lake's hockey teams as they prepared for the Derek Kakegamic Memorial Hockey Tournament from February 25-27.

Six teams competed in the annual tournament, each facing off in hopes of winning the $15,000 championship prize.  In the end, the Riverhawks lost the A-side championship to the Chiefs for a final score of 8-2.  All six teams went home with prizes in the B and C side divisions.
